As the first state in the union to legalize recreational marijuana, Colorado knows a thing or two about pot. Hey Hue has brought back some of our favorite artists from our inaugural Sex Drugs Rock & Roll pop-up along with a few new voices for an artful celebration of the herb that’s hot boxed our square state.
Arvada-based artist Mark Bueno uses an array of mediums and techniques such as spray paint, masking tape, stencils, wood inlay, collage, and assemblage. His style ranges from geometric abstraction to pop art. He earned a BFA from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Boulder printmaker Sam Cikauskas explores the intersection between the environment and civilization, specifically through agriculture and gardening, in his practice. He earned his BFA from Northern Illinois University and his MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder. He serves as director of printmaking at Flatiron Press.
Debra Coffman lives in Denver. She explores different paint mediums such as coffee and tea as a watercolor medium but is well versed in acrylic and watercolor. For her recent cannabis artwork she took actual marijuana leaves and built up color around them with watercolor. After working in the textile industry for over a decade she is now discovering fiber arts and mixed media.
Heidi Jung's love of plants and insects began at an early age and serves as both her inspiration and subject matter. Classically trained as a photographer, Jung continues to see the world through a lens; aesthetically bringing a mix of detail, light and movement to the foreground for the viewer. She earned her BFA from Metro State University of Denver.
Jung is represented by Michael Warren Contemporary.
Artist Stephanie Kantor explores the paradoxical aspects of culture in her work. Inspired by family heirlooms, idiosyncratic collections, and her childhood landscape, she utilizes ornamentation and decoration to subvert and undermine reality and artifice. Stephanie earned her BFA in Ceramics from Penn State University and her MFA in Ceramics from University of Colorado Boulder.
Denver artist George P. Perez investigates the banality of everyday in his interdisciplinary work with a foundation in photography. He often uses found photographs, including those of his childhood, as the materials in his art. George earned a BFA from the University of Colorado Boulder.
Boulder artist Erica Podwoiski explores painting through an autobiographical lens. She holds an MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder and a BFA from Columbus College of Art & Design.
Denver artist Bruce Price earned his BFA from Rocky Mountain College of Art and his MFA from Maine College of Art. His mirrored digital collages play topsy-turvy with pattern, color, and perception all in the name of cannabis.
